TNB, PETRONAS in CCS technology tie-up

November 6, 2023

Tenaga Nasional Berhad(TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology for gas-fired power plants.

In a joint statement, the companies said this collaborative endeavour underscored both parties’ commitment to Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), in line with the nation’s ambition to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

They said the NETR identified carbon capture, utilisation and storage as the sixth energy transition lever and outlined a clear path to carbon neutrality, adding that the MoU translated these ambitions into actionable initiatives.

TNB president and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Baharin Din said the utility company is fully committed to achieving net-zero by 2050 and is actively pursuing various initiatives to drive decarbonisation.

PETRONAS president and group CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the MoU was testimony to their shared conviction to deliver a pathway to responsibly provide energy security.
