PKNPk and TNB GENCO Seal MoU to Explore Potential of Floating Solar Photovoltaic Projects

September 1, 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: The Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with TNB Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB GENCO) to assess the potential for developing Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) projects in the rivers of hydroelectric dams and reservoir areas under TNB in Perak.

The Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, emphasized that this signifies the state’s unwavering commitment towards ensuring sustainable development on both national and international fronts.

“The state government supports the National Energy Transition Plan (NETR) policy that outlines the aim of achieving 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050. Following the recent launch of NETR Phase 1, PKNPk and TNB Genco have engaged in several discussions and expressed mutual interest in collaborating to explore the development of FSPV in TNB’s areas,” he stated.

“This effort aligns with the NETR Plan for the Flagship – New Energy Zone, led by TNB, which focuses on the development of floating solar with a total potential capacity of 2,500 MW on TNB’s hydro dams for electricity generation and energy storage,” he added.

He further clarified that during the State Executive Council meeting on February 8th, approval was granted for the phased implementation of the floating solar farm development project.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of PKNPk, Datuk Redza Rafiq, affirmed in his statement that they firmly believe the high-impact project, with its sustainable environmental benefits, can achieve long-term energy goals.

He noted that it will also drive technological innovation, creating numerous business and job opportunities, particularly within the state of Perak.

“Through collaboration with TNB GENCO, PKNPk will undertake a feasibility study within the stipulated timeframe, setting the precedent for FSPV initiatives,” he remarked.

The event, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) during The Energy Transition Exhibition 2023, witnessed the exchange of 13 documents between TNB and various government and private agencies.

Present at the event were TNB Chairman, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Majid, and TNB GENCO’s Executive Vice President of Business and Commercial Development, Datuk Hisham Abdul Halim.
